Meet Dan Solomon

Dan started playing with Charles River in 1976 and continued to put the boots on until the early 90’s. Around that time he also began the transition to being the man behind the whistle at practice. While, by his own admission, he wasn’t always sure of what to do as coach, he ran a practice that was described as “vicious” by the Green & Orange of the day.

Dan played mostly tighthead prop, a couple of seasons as B side #8 and also one season as B-C side wing/fullback due to a neck injury keeping him out of the front row – but never off the pitch. Over the years Dan proudly played every position in a live game, due somewhat to the fact that back in the day River played 3 sides a weekend but often showed up with 22 players (all of whom were first-rate, of course), so he had a few three-match days with a quick social beverage or two before the third one

Some of Dan’s favorite River memories are: tours to England/Wales, the Bahamas, and Ireland, a couple of amazing times in New Orleans,  winning a couple of matches at the Harvard Sevens with River’s 2nd side, beating Boston RFC at NERFU – where he played the last 9 minutes as an energetic (and possibly less than sober) injury sub, scoring two tries as an unlikely #13 in a B-side match, pushover scrum tries (the dream of every front row), and mostly years striving, bleeding, winning (more than not) and having a great time with a bunch of excellent people all on the same page.

Dan has remained active in the rugby community, serving as a ref, coach, and occasional player. When not indulging his passions on the pitch he is a partner in the firm of Blank & Solomon. Dan resides in Methuen, helping to extend River’s alumni foothold in the Merrimack Valley.
