Awards

Every year at the annual Charles River Rugby awards celebration and banquet, we recognize outstanding players for their contributions on and off the rugby pitch.

2014 Award Winners

  • Most Valuable Player: Sarah Bee Wetherbee

Bee was a powerhouse in the backs and now is the powerhouse in the forwards.  She’s 100% committed at every practice and every game, mentally and physically and is willing to do whatever is necessary to make the team the best it can be – even if what is necessary is switching positions mid-way through the year.  She’s wiley, strong, hard0hitting, communicative, super-fit, and a leader on the field in word and in deed. She is the one. The only. She is the aggressive Bee!

  • Most Improved Player Award: Alicia Scahill
  • Rookie of the Year Award: Steph Chau
  • Unsung Hero Award: Alex Zadel
  • Rat Spirit Award: Jehanne Junguenet

Jehanne is the epitome of Rat Spirit.  She lives and breaths Charles River; she may even be hiding paws and a tail under all that Chuck River swag she wears on the reg.  She’s got boundless energy and is ready and willing to help out in any capacity to make this team the best it can be – that is, the Best. Freaking. Rugby. Team. In. Boston.  As captain, she regularly attends e-board meetings, despite not being required to, she volunteers her time to assist in the planning and execution of nearly every River event, and she never fails to deliver inspiring and poignant pre-game speeches. She’s our social media maven, our digital design diva, our photo booth phenom, and our very lovable leader.  The team just wouldn’t be the same without her!

2013 Award Winners

  • Most Valuable Player- 2013 Recipient: Sarah Bee Wetherbee
BEE MVP | Charles River RUgby

    MVPs never quit.

  • Most Improved Player Award - 2013 Recipient: Chrissy Vailas

Chrissy has had quite the learning curve this year.  She took on a relatively new position while joining a new team and learning entirely new plays! Despite the cavalcade of changes, she quickly came into her own and has become a key player on the field – with hands of gold and a voice that’s growing louder with every game!

  • Rookie of the Year Award - 2013 Recipient: Jamie Carrillo

The term “Juggernaut” is apropos for Jamie – she just can’t be stopped!  She came to our team during a really tough season and stepped into some really big shoes.  Her calm demeanor on the field juxtaposed with her unstoppable force earned her the respect of her coaches and teammates, numerous bitch o’ the pitch designations, the fear of her opponents, and the title of Backs Captain.  Beyond her prowess on the field, she has brought a vast number of rookies along with her, making this team go from one that struggled to have subs at a game to one that needed to fight for a b-side to get everyone playing time!  She’s made an immense impact on this team in the short time she’s been her and is well-deserving of this Rookie of the Year Award!

  • Unsung Hero Award - 2013 Recipient: Maegan Hoover

While Maegan does not speak up very often, her actions speak for themselves.  As the fullback, she has saved the River Rats from many a try being scored against us.  She makes the tackles that others have let through, she catches balls and saves us from losing precious field position, she fights through opponents’ defensive line (with her signature spin move) where others would be stopped in their tracks, and, in her role as captain, she fought fiercely for the best interest of her teammates.  She does all these things without a fuss, but this award proves her contributions in the clutch, both on the field and off, have not gone unnoticed!
